The Sunshine Grind – #SSMT17 Gears Up For Five Straight Nights of Action
TAMPA, Fla. (February 8, 2017) – After having the last two nights off, the Sunshine State Modified Tour roars back into action this evening at East Bay Raceway Park. Tonight’s $1,000-to-win hump day special kicks off five consecutive nights of racing, including four in a row at East Bay.
The next three races will all culminate towards Saturday night’s big 75-lap, $5,000-to-win main event, which will also serve as the final points paying night on the tour and crown a champion.
As the points stand now, Kyle Strickler holds a 15 point margin over Kenny Wallace atop the standings. Strickler undeniably has the momentum on his side, coming off of back-to-back wins at North Florida Speedway. On the other hand, Wallace has finished on the podium in all three SSMT features thus far, including two consecutive runner-up finishes.
Two other drivers to keep an eye on may be “The Destroyer” Rick Conoyer and “The Flyin’ Dutchman” Mike VanGenderen. Conoyer is fresh off an impressive fourth place effort Sunday afternoon at North Florida and set the fastest time in last night’s practice session at East Bay. On the flip side, VanGenderen will be making his 2017 SSMT debut tonight at East Bay, but it looks as though he is picking up right where he left off last year. VanGenderen was second quickest in practice last night and looks poised to repeat as a feature winner with the SSMT at East Bay.
