RECAP: Greater Grand Forks Fair Special, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (June 23, 2017) – River Cities Speedway had another great crowd on hand Friday night as Buffalo Wild Wings presented night one of the Greater Grand Forks Fair special. The night featured $5 admission for NOSA 410 Sprint Cars, WISSOTA Late Models, NLSA Lightning Sprints, and INEX Legends.

Austin Pierce, Bill Mooney, Kelsi Pederson, and Troy Hoff all visited RydellCars.com Victory Lane.

The Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Cars were 26 cars strong for their 25-lap main event. Austin Pierce and Jackson Moffett brought the field to the green with Pierce grabbing the early lead.

Wade Nygaard quickly moved into the second position and set his sights on Pierce as the lead duo reached lapped traffic within the first five laps. Nygaard placed a bid for the lead on lap seven as he ducked to the inside of Pierce in turns one and two.

Pierce fended off the nine-time and defending NOSA champion to hold the lead, despite being mired in heavy lapped traffic.

At the halfway point, the red flag came out as Jackson Moffett and Nick Omdahl made contact on the front stretch. Omdahl’s No. 0 machine flipped end over end twice before coming to rest on his side. Omdahl hopped out of his mangled car uninjured.

On the restart, Chris Ranten and Nygaard battled for the second spot as Pierce looked to check out from the field.

Pierce cruised to his second win of the season as Nygaard, Ranten, Thomas Kennedy, and Casey Mack rounded out the top five.

Selkirk, Manitoba’s Bill Mooney picked up the Performance Auto Late Model feature win.

After starting outside of the front row, Mooney got by polesitter Troy Schill on lap two to take the lead. Once out front, Mooney pulled away from the rest of the field until he reached lapped traffic.

Four-time WISSOTA Late Model national champion, Ricky Weiss, reeled in Mooney by lap eight as the race for the lead was on. On lap 12, Nick Minske lost the handle on his machine and spun in turn one. Weiss had nowhere to go and was collected in the incident, which caused significant damage to the right front of his No. 7.

Weiss restarted in the second position, but fell back as the race resumed. Brad Seng and Dustin Strand moved into second and third, but they didn’t have anything for Mooney.

The driver of the Lucas Oil No. 2M scored his second win of the season as Strand edged out Seng for second.

Kelsi Pederson, daughter of Late Model driver Joey Pederson, led from green to checkered in the NLSA Lightning Sprint feature. The young lady out of East Grand Forks, Minn. held off veteran driver Dexter Dvergsten in the closing laps in lapped traffic to score her first career win.

Pederson turned the fastest lap of the event at 12.622 seconds, averaging 85.565mph around the high-banked three-tenths mile oval.

Flasher, North Dakota’s Troy Hoff took the lead on lap four of the INEX Legends feature after moving by Alex Braseth.

Dylan Johnson and Tim Estenson battled for the second spot behind Hoff throughout the midpoint of the race. The two traded spots lap after lap as Hoff held a comfortable one-second lead.

Johnson cleared Estenson in the closing laps and reeled in Hoff, but was never able to get close enough to mount a serious charge.

Hoff scored the win over Johnson, Estenson, Scott Richardson, and Braseth.
