GRAND FORKS, N.D. (August 22, 2017) – Austin Pierce and the Opp Construction / Lithia Ford team picked up their fifth win of the season on Saturday at Greenbush Race Park in Greenbush, Minn. with the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints. Pierce, who started the night with a heat race win, rolled from the seventh starting position for the 25-lap main event.
“We were second in points after the heat race, which would have put us outside of the front row for the feature, but with the redraw, we had to start inside of row four,” said Austin. “I thought it was going to be more of a one-lane track like it was the previous time we were there, but you could actually run both the top and bottom. It made for some pretty good passing and we were able to drive up to the front.”
Austin steadily worked his way up the running order, taking the second spot from Nick Omdahl with 10 laps to go. From there, Austin moved by Wade Nygaard to take the lead with four laps to go after Nygaard suffered wing damage from a lapped car.
Austin ran the final four laps uncontested as he went on to claim his second career win at Greenbush by nearly four seconds.
With the win, Austin extended his NOSA points lead significantly as Casey Mack, who was second in points, elected to take on the World of Outlaws at Red River Valley Speedway on Saturday.
“We’ve got a pretty comfortable lead now. I guess our goal is to make sure we finish the rest of these races. If we can do that, we should be able to wrap up the points within the next night or two,” said Austin.
On Friday night, the Austin Pierce Racing team took on the World of Outlaws for the final time in 2017 at River Cities Speedway.
“It was a good night for us. Our goal at the beginning was to make the A-main,” said Austin. With the race immediately following the Knoxville Nationals, many national runners followed the Outlaws up to Grand Forks, leading to a stout 40-car field. “I don’t think I’ve seen that many good cars on one Outlaw night so to make that A-main was huge for us.”
Austin finished third in the B-main to claim a transfer spot in the 24-car, 40-lap main event. Just as he did at the Outlaw show in June at River Cities, Austin was the highest finishing NOSA regular after finishing 19th from the 23rd starting position.
