Pederson Scores BRRP Win, Johnson Takes Checkers at Greenbush

By Mike Spieker

(August 1, 2017) – Another two-race weekend was on tap Saturday and Sunday for the Northern Lightning Sprint Association (NLSA) last weekend. Brandon Johnson of Holt, Minn. and Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks, Minn. each grabbed wins to add to their 2017 totals.

On Saturday at Greenbush, Brandon Johnson drove from third to first on the opening lap. The driver of the No. 22 Lightning Sprint moved by Alan Truscinski and Kelsi Pederson en route to the lead.

Once out front, Johnson was untouchable.

Johnson cruised out to a comfortable lead at the midway point of the race, as Dexter Dvergsten challenged Pederson and Truscinski for the runner-up spot. Dvergsten was able to get by both competitors with five to go, but by that time Johnson had already established an insurmountable lead.

Johnson went on to score the win by nearly five seconds, as Dvergsten, Pederson, Truedson, and Alex Truscinski rounded out the top five.

Kesli Pederson scored her first career win at Buffalo River Race Park and second overall in the NLSA lightning sprint feature after a close call at the halfway point on Sunday.

Last week’s winner, Brendan Mullen, had his hands full trying to fend off Pederson when a mechanical issue significantly slowed his No. 11M machine. Pederson could not avoid Mullen and made contact with his rear bumper, causing the two to get hooked together.

Pederson was able to rejoin the field in the lead as the caution was charged to Mullen. A pair of restarts followed, which allowed Presley Truedson to move into the second spot by Josh Abrahamson.

Pederson ran the rest of the race unchallenged as she took the win.
