NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. (May 1, 2018) – The MSTS season kicked off with one of the highest paying 360 Sprint Car shows in the country last weekend at Park Jefferson Speedway. The $10,000-to-win Pepsi South Dakota Sprint Car Nationals brought in 37 of the best 360 Sprints in the upper Midwest and Lee Grosz was right in the thick of things all weekend long.

Friday served as a preliminary night with two sets of heat races determining the top 16 in passing points and setting up Saturday’s starting line up.

“We were able to move forward in both heats. For what we were given with track conditions, we did ok, but we always hope to do a little better,” said Grosz of the rubbered up racing surface, which was caused in part by gusty conditions all day Friday. “I was hoping to at least get locked into the first three rows [for Saturday’s A-main], but we ended up qualifying ninth which put us in the fifth row. It wasn’t what we wanted, but it was still nice to be locked in and not have to worry about getting in the show on Saturday.”

Grosz moved from fourth to third in the first heat and fifth to second in heat number two.

Grosz had his work cut out for him for Saturday’s 30-lapper with a lot of tough cars in front of him. “Starting ninth, we didn’t really have anything to lose so we tried a few different things,” Grosz explained.

The driver of the Kyle Johnson Trucking / Fischer Auto Body No. 4J battled for position inside the top 10 all race long and rounded out the top 10 when the checkers flew.

“It didn’t work out as planned, but we definitely learned a few things and what not to do for next time,” Grosz continued. “We’ll put that into our notebook for next time and try to get it better for this weekend.”

This weekend a pair of MSTS shows are on tap, including one of Grosz’s best tracks; Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa. In three events at Rapid Speedway in 2017, Grosz picked up two podium finishes with a worst finish of fourth. “We are looking forward to getting back to Rock Rapids. We’ve been kind of struggling this year so we’ve changed a few things back to where we had them. We’re looking to get the season turned around with a couple top threes this weekend at Wagner [S.D] and Rock Rapids, or even a win to get our confidence back up there and get the season rolling,” Grosz concluded.
