Nygaard’s Runner-Up at Devils Lake Highlights Strong Weekend

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (May 30, 2018) – It was full speed ahead over the Memorial Day weekend for Wade Nygaard and the Auto Finance Super Center crew. Three Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Car races had the team racing at three different tracks over the course of three consecutive nights.

The action began Friday at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks. Nygaard raced to a runner-up finish in his heat after starting seventh, which put him fifth on the grid for the 25-lap feature. Nygaard raced inside the top five all race long, reaching as high as third at the midpoint of the race. The nine-time NOSA champion took the checkers in fourth, which was a good start to the grueling weekend.

On Saturday, the Nygaard Motorsports crew unloaded at Devils Lake Speedway. Again, Nygaard had to drive from deep in the field in his heat as he raced from sixth to finish second.

Nygaard started seventh in the feature. “At the get go, it was fast around the bottom. I made one lap around the bottom before I decided I had to do something different if I wanted to pass anybody,” he said. “I stuck with the middle-to-high groove. It kept getting faster, which the bottom slowed up a bit. I got up to second before [Nick] Omdahl slid up in my lane with a couple laps to go. Ultimately, it took too long to get the front. If I could have gotten to him a lap sooner, I could have maybe tried something on the last lap. But catching him was one thing, passing him was another.”

Nygaard’s second place finish at Devils Lake was his third of the young 2018 season.

On Sunday, the team wrapped up the weekend as the NOSA Sprints made their first appearance to Buffalo River Race Park in Glyndon, Minn. in two years. Nygaard has three wins at the tight quarter-mile and was looking to get number four.

“Sunday was the best Buffalo River track I’ve ever raced on,” said Nygaard. “That was super fun. It was hard to pass in the beginning because everybody was fast, but once we started blowing the track off, it got a little wider and we could start making moves. I was a little bit too careful getting around the cars early on. Then Dobmeier, Ranten and Kennedy got away from me a bit. At the end, I reeled them in a bit. Our car was getting better and better every lap.”

The Nygaard Motorsports team is going to watch the weather this week to decide if they will run the NOSA double header at River Cities Speedway and Devils Lake Speedway, or run their 360 at Jackson Motorplex and Cedar Lake Speedway.
