Strand, Dobmeier, Hunter & Burrows Claim Wins on a Wild Night at the Bullring
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (June 29, 2018) – It was a hot, muggy Friday night at River Cities Speedway for Midseason Track Championship for the Street Stocks and Midwest Modifieds. The event was broadcasted live on cable television across the upper Midwest by Midco Sport Network. Both the fans at the track and those tuning in at home were treated to an eventful evening at the Bullring.
Corbett pushed high in turn four on lap two, which opened the door for Balcaen to take the lead. Dustin Strand quickly moved to the outside of Corbett to take second as he set his sights on Balcaen for the lead.
Strand made the pass for the lead two laps later to the outside of Balcaen and immediately distanced himself from the field. A bobble by Balcaen allowed Corbett to reclaim the runner-up spot before the caution came out for Troy Schill, who had come to a stop in turn two.
On the restart, three cars became tangled in turn two and resulted in Bill Mooney getting upside down. Mooney endured one barrel roll before coming to rest on his side. Mooney was ok.
Another wild incident occurred following the restart. While running fifth, Travis Robertson biked up in three and just about rolled his No. 1R machine. When the left side came back down, the car veered off to the right and launched off the turns three and four embankment at full speed. Robertson’s car flew through the air before crashing into the billboards outside of the track, breaking through three 18-inch thick wooden support beams and crashing through two-chain link fences.
Robertson walked away with only a sore neck.
The rest of the event ran caution free as Strand cruised to the win to extend his NLRA points lead. Shane Edginton, Corbett, Brad Seng and Joey Pederson rounded out the top five.
Mark Dobmeier cruised to his fourth Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Car win of the season at River Cities and seventh overall. Dobmeier started on the outside of the front row and led all 25 laps en route to the win.
The caution was displayed on lap two after Shane Roemeling got sideways in turn two and was t-boned by Bob Martin. The two made heavy contact, but both were ok.
Two more cautions before halfway resulted in an Evergreen Insurance restart, with pole sitter Chris Ranten lined up beside Dobmeier. Each time, however, Dobmeier was able to pull away from Ranten entering turn one and open up a comfortable lead. Dobmeier was followed to the line by Ranten, Austin Pierce, Jordan Adams and Jade Hastings, who had to restart at the tail of the field on lap six after going off the track in turn two.
The Happy Harry’s WISSOTA Midwest Mods had a strong field of 24 cars on hand. Their main event got off to a rough start for Todd Johnson. Johnson started fourth, but biked up in turn one, lifting the left side tires off the ground about four feet, before slamming back down on the track. The caution was quickly displaying, but Johnson surprisingly rejoined the field for the complete restart.
Austin Hunter and Lance Schill battled for the point on the restart. Hunter grabbed the spot as Schow challenged Schill for the runner-up spot. Schow claimed the spot after a mid-race restart as he set his sights on Hunter for the lead.
Hunter and Schow broke away from the rest of the pack with Hunter holding a slim four car length lead. Hunter made contact with a lapped car, which allowed Schow to close to within two car lengths.
Once clear of lapped traffic, Hunter was able to hold off Schow for his second River Cities Speedway win of the season. Schow, Schill, Jamie Dietzler and Reise Stenberg rounded out the top five.
During heat race action for the Midwest Modifieds, Jeff Reed of Bemidji went for a wild ride down the back straightaway. After contact with another car, Reed barrel rolled six times before his car came to rest on the roof. Fortunately, Reed walked away uninjured.
Adam Burrows of West Fargo picked up his first River Cities Speedway win of the season in dominating fashion. With a season-high 32 Wells Concrete WISSOTA Street Stocks checked in, the field was whittled down to the fastest 24 for their 15-lap main event.
Burrows started on the pole and jumped out to the lead over defending track champion, Ryan Johnson. Johnson had his hands full with Daniel Aberle in the early going, which allowed Burrows to extend his lead.
Despite encountering lapped traffic midway through the race, Burrows maintained his healthy lead as he cruised to the checkers. Johnson, Aberle, John Halvorson and Zach Lee rounded out the top five.
