CRARY, N.D. (June 30, 2018) – It was a chamber of commerce day at Devils Lake Speedway on Saturday as race fans from all over the region flocked to the high-banked quarter-mile for the speedway’s inaugural United States Modified Touring Series event. Twenty-three of the best Modified drivers in the country were checked in, along with the WISSOTA Midwest Mods, WISSOTA Street Stocks and Pure Stocks.

Kyle Prauner and local favorite, Dustin Strand, led the field to the green for the 40-lap USMTS feature. Strand took the early lead, but several cautions in the opening laps kept him from finding his groove out front.

A five car pile up ensued on lap two, which collected Terry Phillips, Rodney Sanders and another local favorite, Lance Schill, among others. Sanders was able to resume while Phillips and Schill were forced to retire from the event due to excessive damage.

Twin brothers, Johnny and Stormy Scott, made their way around Strand following a restart. Ryan Gustin challenged Strand for the final podium position around lap 10 and took the position amid lapped traffic.

Strand battled back and reclaimed the third spot near the halfway point. The race had a long green flag stretch to close the event. Johnny Scott opened up his advantage over Stormy by running high in turn one and pitching his car to run the extreme low side off turn two.

Johnny Scott went on to win his sixth USMTS feature of the season and 37th overall. Stormy Scott, Strand, Gustin, and Zack Vanderbeek rounded out the top five.

Preston Carr started on the pole and picked up the WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature win. The Carrington, N.D. driver held off the strong pack of 21 cars, including the hard charging Austin Hunter.

Hunter, who was fresh off wins at Red River Co-op Speedway in Winnipeg on Thursday and River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks on Friday, looked to remain unbeaten on the weekend as he hammered the cushion on the outside of the speedway.

With five laps to go, Nate Reynolds found a way around Hunter to grab second. Carr went on to take the win over Reynolds, Hunter, Eric Haugland and Stoney Kruk.

Greg Jose led the first two circuits of the WISSOTA Street Stock feature, but he was passed by Adam Burrows on lap two. Burrows looked to be the class of the field in the early going as he jumped out to a somewhat comfortable lead.
Behind him, Kasey Ussatis, Jose, Daniel Aberle, and Bob Banish Jr. all battled for second. With 11 laps down and nine to go, Banish claimed the runner-up position and set his sights on Burrows for the lead.

Banish quickly reeled in Burrows and made the pass for the lead with seven to go. Burrows battled back, but Banish went on to take the win.

The Pure Stock feature was red flagged on lap three after Brandt Ferguson went barrel rolling off the turn two embankment. Ferguson climbed from his machine unharmed. Fifth place starter, Mark Bromstad sliced his way through the field as he charged to the front. Bromstad took the lead from Tony Bundy with five to go.

Once out front, Bromstad cruised to the win.

Racing returns to Devils Lake Speedway on Saturday, July 14th, featuring the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA 410 Sprint Cars, WISSOTA Late Models and Professional Dirt Series. Micro wrestling will come to Devils Lake Speedway Bar & Grill on Saturday, July 7th.
