Dobmeier, Pederson, Stenberg & Reimer claim opening night wins at River Cities Speedway

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (May 17, 2019) – The River Cities Speedway faithful braved cool, windy conditions on Friday evening as the speedway kicked off its 2019 season. Sixty-nine race teams packed the pit area among the four racing divisions.

For the 13th time in his career, Mark Dobmeier raced to the opening night win at the Bullring. Dobmeier started on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Car feature, but things got off to a rocky start on lap one. Dobmeier and polesitter Shane Roemeling made contact in turn two, which turned Roemeling sideways in front of the entire field. The result was a five car pileup on the back straightaway, which included Thomas Kennedy, Chris Ranten, Wade Nygaard, Bob Martin and Roemeling. Only Nygaard was able to resume.

“Roemeling got the jump on the start and slid up in front of me. I knew the first corner was my best chance so I gave him a big slider. It was a big River Cities slider and at the end of the day there are two pedals in each car,” said Dobmeier of the lap one incident in victory lane. “I race everybody hard and I’ll never dirty anybody.”

In the incident, Roemeling’s fuel tank was punctured which made for a lengthy red flag. When the race resumed, Dobmeier took control of the lead. Jordan Adams held the second spot until Brendan Mullen took over the runner-up position on lap five. Nygaard came back through the field and moved into the second spot on lap eight before taking the point away from Dobmeier on the lap 12 restart.

Nygaard held the point with Dobmeier in tow until Dobmeier found a way around the 10-time and defending NOSA champion on lap 16. Once out front, Dobmeier pulled away from the rest of the field as he cruised to the win.

“On the last restart, I think my experience in rubbered up tracks paid off and I was able to sneak by and get the lead again,” said Dobmeier.

Nygaard, Adams, Nick Omdahl and Ty Hanten rounded out the top five.

The Performance Auto NLRA Late Model feature was another classic battle between two of River Cities Speedway’s most decorated drivers. Joey Pederson and Brad Seng put on a show racing for the lead and the win in the closing laps of the 20-lap feature. Pederson passed two lapped cars in one corner with nine laps to go and looked to put some distance between himself and Seng. However, Seng split the lapped car on the following circuit to keep pace with Pederson. The lead was down to two car lengths with two trips around the high-banked three-tenths mile bullring remaining. Seng cut that lead in half as they passed underneath Mike Witheril’s white flag. Seng powered his way into the lead down the back straightaway, but Pederson put his No. 7P up on the cushion in turns three and four and drive right around Seng off the corner to steal the win.

Seng, Shane Edginton, defending NLRA champion Dustin Strand, and Mike Balcaen rounded out the top five.

Reise Stenberg of Argusville, N.D. dominated the Happy Harry’s WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature from the pole position. Stenberg grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag, but quickly had sixth-place starter, Austin Hunter, and eighth-place starter, Lance Schill, hot on his heels. Hunter took a look underneath Stenberg the first three circuit’s, but each time Stenberg’s momentum carried him back into the lead. At the midway point of the race, Stenberg opened up his advantage to a full straightaway. Meanwhile, the battle for second continued between Hunter and Schill.

Stenberg comfortably cruised to the win as Hunter held off Schill for second. Nate Reynolds and Aaron Blacklance rounded out the top five.

In a wild finish, Bryce Reimer picked up his first career River Cities Speedway Wells Concrete Street Stock feature win. Reimer led all 15 laps, but he had heavy pressure from Bradon Miller in the final laps. Miller searched every inch of the Bullring trying to find a way around Reimer and pulled alongside of Reimer’s No. 03 coming to the white flag. Miller again pulled even with Reimer going into turn three, but the two leaders made contact while going three wide with lapped traffic. Miller was sent spinning into the infield while Reimer came around to take the checkered flag and the win.

Racing continues next Friday night at River Cities Speedway with the AFCO Race of Champions qualifier for all three WISSOTA divisions, along with the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints. Green flag drops at 7pm.
