Ryan Schow claims first ever Midwest Modified win at River Cities
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (June 14, 2019) – The River Cities Speedway pit area was packed on Friday night with 78 cars checked in among the four divisions, led by the Happy Harry’s Midwest Mods with 27 entries.
Ryan Schow claimed his first career Midwest Modified feature win over a stacked 22-car field. Schow took the lead from Randy Thompson on lap seven of 18. Once out front, Schow had to contend with Lance Schill. Schill was all over the rear bumper of Schow as Ryan’s brother, Matt, moved his way into the third spot.
In the closing laps, Ryan Schow distanced himself from Schill, while Matt closed in on him.
Ryan Schow took the checkers unchallenged, but after crossing the line, Ryan suffered a catastrophic rear end failure in turn one. He was unable to drive his No. 28 machine around to the front stretch so Ryan hitched a ride from Matt into RydellCars.com Victory Lane. It was smiles all the way around for the Schow brothers as they grabbed two podium positions. Schill hung on to grab second over Matt.
The 25-lap Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Car feature got off to a rocky start as Nick Ranten and Nick Omdahl got upside down in separate incidents. Ranten was unable to continue, while Omdahl rejoined the field with a new top wing and no nose wing.
Front row starters, Jordan Adams and Shane Roemeling traded the top spot early on until Jade Hastings took the point on lap five. Hastings opened up a big lead at the midpoint of the race. Seventh place starter, Austin Pierce, moved up to second and slowly began reeling in Hastings.
Omdahl was also on the move in his battered No. 0 machine. Omdahl tip-toed around the low side of the speedway and made it as high as third and finished in fourth.
Pierce showed his nose under Hastings amid lapped traffic in the closing stages, but Hastings got up on the wheel and drove to the victory.
Pierce and Wade Nygaard rounded out the podium.
Dustin Strand charged from the fourth position to claim the Performance Auto WISSOTA NLRA feature win. Mike Balcaen led the opening lap before Strand powered to the lead using the outside of the speedway. Once in the lead, Strand checked out from the rest of the field, claiming the win by over four and a half seconds in the caution-free 20-lapper.
Brad Seng grabbed third over Joey Pederson. Shane Edginton rounded out the top five.
Ryan Johnson raced to the Wells Concrete WISSOTA Street Stock feature win. Trey Hess, who was in search of his first career Street Stock win at River Cities, started on the outside of the front row and led the field until eight laps remained. Behind him, a hornet’s nest developed as Johnson, Daniel Aberle, and Doug VanMill all closed in on Hess. Exiting turn four, Johnson and Aberle went three wide with Hess. Hess and Aberle made heavy contact as Johnson took the point.
Aberle was all over Johnson in the closing laps, but Johnson held on to pick up his first River Cities Speedway win of the season and his second win of the season overall. Aberle, VanMill, Bryce Reimer and Adam Burrows rounded out the top five.
