Schatz earns podium at Weedsport to highlight return to New York

FARGO, N.D. (August 3, 2021) – The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series returned to the state of New York for the first time in three years last weekend. The Greatest Show on Dirt made appearances at Ransomville Speedway and Weedsport Speedway.

Schatz collected top 10 finishes in both events but the weekend was highlighted by his third-place effort on Saturday at Weedsport.

Schatz was fast all night long on Saturday, timing in third quick and cruising to a heat race victory. A favorable draw for the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash put him on the outside of the front row with Wayne Johnson to his inside. Schatz jumped out to a big lead on the opening lap and, again, ran away with the checkered flag to earn the pole position for the 30-lap main event.

The 10-time series champion stormed out to a sizable advantage early on in the feature. Schatz quickly caught the tail of the field, putting him in lapped traffic by lap eight. That allowed David Gravel and Sheldon Haudenschild to close in and apply pressure for the lead.

Schatz made the right moves through traffic and not only held off the two challengers, but extended his lead at times.

On lap 21, second-place runner Haudenschild bounced his right rear tire off the wall which launched his No. 17 down the back straightaway and past Schatz for the lead.

In the late stages of the race, Haudenschild made contact with a lapped car and spun with two to go, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. Schatz finished third behind Gravel and Brad Sweet at the checkers.

“We just needed to be better,” Schatz mentioned after the race. “You’re not going to be that bad at the end of the race and end up winning. I guess we lucked into a third-place tonight.”

The night before at Ransomville Speedway, Schatz recorded an eighth-place finish in the main event.

This weekend, the series heads to Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 for the Ironman 55 event.

Schatz enters the weekend fourth in points, 238 markers out of the lead.

Schatz and the entire Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team would like to thank all of their great partners for their continued support!
