Schatz finishes third in Capitani Classic; collects pair of top 10s at I-55

FARGO, N.D. (August 9, 2021) –  The biggest week in Sprint Car racing kicked off last night with the Capitani Classic at Knoxville Raceway. After a long weekend at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars, the Tony Stewart / Curb-Agajanian Racing No. 15 team rolled into Knoxville, Iowa in the wee hours of Sunday morning ahead of the Capitani Classic.

Right from the get-go, the 10-time Knoxville Nationals champion looked right at home around the Marion County Fairgrounds half-mile oval. Donny Schatz set quick time in his group by over a tenth-and-a-half of a second, with a lap time of 15.426 seconds, averaging 116.686mph.

Schatz moved up one position in the pole shuffle after topping Justin Henderson in the two-lap head-to-head race. That put the Carquest / Ford Performance car on the outside of the front row for the main event.

Schatz contested for the lead early on and ran within the top three all race long.

Schatz was all over Cory Eliason for the lead on the lap five restart as he worked the high side of the speedway. Eliason kept Schatz at bay by taking his line away entering the corner and breaking his momentum.

That opened up the door for Gravel to sneak underneath Schatz.

Schatz went on to round out the podium at the checkers, just ahead of his Tony Stewart Racing teammate Kerry Madsen.

Schatz will be in action next on Wednesday as he attempts to qualify for the 60th annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals A-main.

The World of Outlaws returned to Pevely, Missouri over the weekend for the fan-favorite Ironman 55. Friday’s Night Before the Ironman yielded a sixth place result for Schatz after starting in 10th.

Schatz started on the outside of the front row for Saturday’s 55-lap main event and ran inside the top three for nearly the first 45 circuits. A late-race restart jumbled up the running order and Schatz crossed the line in ninth.

Schatz still sits fourth in the standings, 258 markers out of the lead.

Schatz and the entire Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team would like to thank all of their great partners for their continued support!
