Schatz hard charges to podium at Port Royal

FARGO, N.D. (October 12, 2021) – Donny Schatz turned in a pair of strong performances last weekend as the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series made their final appearances of the 2021 season in the state of Pennsylvania.

The action at Port Royal kicked off on Friday night with night one of the Nittany Showdown. Schatz showed speed right out of the gate, timing in second quick in qualifying Flight A before picking up a heat race win.

Starting fifth on the grid for the 25-lap feature, Schatz worked his way forward to challenge his Tony Stewart Racing teammate Kerry Madsen for the lead near the halfway point. Schatz took briefly took the point on two separate occasions, but never officially led a lap at the start/finish line.

Late-race restarts did not help Schatz as he went on to cross under the checkers in fourth.

$25,000 was up for grabs on Saturday night for the Nittany Showdown finale and Schatz had a hole to dig himself out of after finishing third in his heat and missing a transfer into the dash by one position. That put the 10-time series champion 12th on the grid for the 30-lap main event.

Schatz wasted no time moving up the running order as he passed four cars on the opening trip around the semi-banked half-mile oval.

While running seventh it took Schatz 12 laps to get by Logan Schuchart, but he did so with a bold three-wide pass to not only get by Schuchart but Brent Marks as well to claim a spot inside the top five.

Another late-race charge in the final five laps by Schatz put him ahead of Madsen and Jacob Allen to round out the podium and claim the night’s KSE Hard Charger award.

“It was a pretty solid finish. These Carquest guys did a great job,” said Schatz on the front stretch after the race. “We made some improvements throughout the night. We had to change engines after the heat race… things just didn’t seem real clean. It was obviously the right call. We learned a lot tonight. This team keeps digging. We’ll get some respectable finishes and the wins will come.”

After a rare off weekend this week, the Outlaws will return to action October 22nd at Lakeside Speedway near Kansas City.

Schatz has two career victories at the four-tenths mile oval, which came in 2019 and 2015.

The driver of the Carquest / Ford Performance No. 15 currently sits fourth in the standings, 166 points behind leader Brad Sweet and just four points behind Carson Macedo for third.

Schatz and the entire Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team would like to thank all of their great partners for their continued support!
