Schatz solid at Williams Grove National Open
FARGO, N.D. (October 4, 2021) – The third and final crown jewel event of the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car season was on tap last weekend at Williams Grove Speedway with the running of the National Open.
Donny Schatz came away with a sixth-place run during Saturday night’s championship feature, but the weekend was highlighted by his podium effort on Friday.
Strong qualifying efforts both nights led to a pair of heat race wins and trips to the DIRTVision Fast Pass Dash.
Schatz earned the third starting position for Friday’s feature. He ran in the third position for the majority of the race and rounded out the podium at the checkers.
“Tonight was the night to try something (on the setup), and it helped. We’ve got to do a lot of things over and above what we did tonight to unleash all this horsepower,” said Schatz post-race on Friday of his FPS 410-powered Carquest No. 15. “It’s a fun challenge and the guys have done a great job and got us a pretty solid finish. I feel like we could hang with the leaders and felt like if we could have stayed in traffic and had to move around a little bit, we might have had an opportunity to move up more.”
After drawing the seven pill for the Dash on Saturday, Schatz found himself fighting for a spot inside the top five the remainder of the night.
At the completion of 40-lap, $75,000-to-win main event, Schatz took the checkers in the sixth position.
Another sizable chunk was taken out of his points deficit to leader Brad Sweet. Schatz now sits 204 markers out heading into Port Royal Speedway, a track in which Schatz is no stranger to victory lane.
Schatz has four career wins at the semi-banked half-mile including three wins in the last five events. Those three wins came consecutively from 2017 through 2019.
