Schatz looks to bounce back after Tulare tumble
FARGO, N.D. (March 16, 2022) – After a tough weekend at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California, Donny Schatz and the Tony Stewart / Curb-Agajanian Racing team are looking to bounce back this weekend as the World of Outlaws continue their swing through the west coast. The upcoming doubleheader weekend features Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, California on Friday night and a trip to Merced Speedway in Merced, California on Saturday. Schatz will be looking for his first career win at both venues.
Last weekend the Greatest Show on Dirt made their highly anticipated return to the exciting Thunderbowl Raceway. Schatz advanced two positions in the main event on Friday to come away with a 12th-place finish.
On Saturday, the 10-time series champion had to fight all night after an 18th-place run in time trials. Schatz advanced into the feature by way of a second-place finish in the last chance showdown to put him 22nd on the grid for the 35-lapper.
Schatz flew through the field right at the drop of the green flag. The driver of the Carquest / Ford Performance No. 15 gained 10 positions in the first 10 laps. However on lap 12, Schatz got upside down exiting turn two. It was a hard ride, but Schatz climbed out of his damaged J&J uninjured. The final result was a 24th place finish.
This weekend’s events at Ocean and Merced will be the first since 2016 and 2014, respectively.
Schatz’s best finish at Ocean Speedway was a third-place run in the series debut in 2000. In his most recent visit in 2016, Schatz drove from 18th to finish sixth.
Likewise for Merced, Schatz’s best run was a fifth-place effort at the World of Outlaws’ first event in 2011. He finished sixth in the last Outlaws event in 2014. In four events at Merced, Schatz has three top ten finishes and an average finish of 8.75.
