Fourth-place run at River Cities highlights Schatz’s homecoming

FARGO, N.D. (August 28, 2022) – It’s one of Donny Schatz’s favorite weeks of the year – the North Dakota doubleheader in August. A stop by the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series at his two home tracks, River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks and Red River Valley Speedway just a couple miles from home in West Fargo.

The action began on Friday night at River Cities, where Schatz timed in 11th quick and just missed out on making the dash with a third-place run in his heat. That put the 10-time series champion behind the eight-ball a bit, but he would rally in the feature to put on a show for the hometown fans.

Starting 11th for the 35-lapper, Schatz cracked his way into the top 10 and slowly continued making his way forward.

Schatz moved into the top five with 21 laps to go and got by Sheldon Haudenschild for fourth two laps later. The race was then slowed by a pair of cautions which seems to stall Schatz’s momentum.

Schatz battled with Haudenschild as the race resumed and was able to fend him off, but was not able to advance higher up in the running order before the checkers flew.

He crossed the line in fourth, gaining seven positions during the feature.

Persistent overnight rains in Fargo made for a fast and tacky track all night long at Red River Valley Speedway on Saturday.

Schatz again just missed a spot in the dash by one spot in his heat, putting him ninth on the grid for the feature. The usually racy three-eighths mile oval was constrained to just one fast groove due to the amount of moisture in the racing surface. That made passing a premium during the feature. As a result, Schatz was only able to advance one spot and finished eighth.

The World of Outlaws will now make the 21-hour pull to Washington for the Sage Fruit Skagit Nationals at Skagit Speedway Thursday through Saturday before a stop to Grays Harbor Raceway on Monday.

Schatz enters the four-race weekend sitting fifth in the series standings.

Schatz and the entire Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing team would like to thank all of their great partners for their continued support!
