HIGHS AND LOWS WITH HIGH LIMIT AT HUSET’S
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (August 17, 2023) – Following a weekend off from the seat of Native Nations Cannabis / Royal River Casino & Hotel No. 11M, Brendan Mullen had the best start in his career in a major 410 sprint car race Tuesday night during the High Limit Sprint Car Series debut at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, South Dakota.
With 47 of the very best 410 sprint car drivers in the world in attendance, Mullen started his night putting down the third best time in his group and fourth best time of the night overall in qualifying. His 10.869 second lap was just over a tenth of a second back of Ryan Timms who was fastest in the session.
Starting on the outside of the front row in the opening heat race of the evening and finished second to Buddy Kofoid to make it into the dash redraw.
“It’s fantastic,” Mullen said on the frontstretch after pulling the four to start on the outside of the second row in the dash. “We race here weekly, and to be honest with you, I don’t think I’ve been up front here redrawing all summer long. It’s been a struggle. We’ve been really off with the car, and we’ve been digging and digging, and the guys have been working their tails off. So, to be standing up here with some of the best guys in the world feels good.”
On the third lap of the 7-lap dash, Mullen passed Aaron Reutzel to put himself on the inside of the second row for the 35-lap, $23,023-to-win main event. Mullen was running fourth following the opening lap, but his outstanding night came to an end on a lap two restart.
Catching the tricky cushion followed by contact with eventual winner Rico Abreu saw Mullen turn over in turn two.
Despite the way the night ended, the team was able to show the speed that they possess and will bring that into Friday’s Blazin’ Challenge at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks. Sitting third in the Blazin’ Challenge points heading into Friday will likely see Mullen start third in his heat race.
Mullen finished fourth after starting 14th at last season’s running of the challenge.
