PIERCE SCORES RUNNER UP FINISH AT ANDERSON CUP FINALE
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (September 6, 2023) – The penultimate race of the 2023 campaign saw Austin Pierce finish second in the Opp Construction / Nelson Auto Center No. 2A last Friday night at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks which also served as the conclusion of the five-race Wayne Anderson Cup mini-series.
Pierce kicked off the night just seven hundredths of a second back of the top qualifying time of the evening which set up a fourth-place start in his heat race. From there, Pierce charged from the outside of the second row to win his heat race.
Pierce drew the outside pole for the final 30-lap main event of the third annual Wayne Anderson Cup. Pierce took the lead on the initial start which was erased by an early caution but ran second through the second attempt to get the race under way.
What followed was a 21-lap green flag run which saw Pierce eat back into Brendan Mullen’s lead with 12 laps to go as the lead duo worked heavy lapped traffic.
The second yellow flag of the race flew three laps later where Pierce was then charged to have to hold off Mark Dobmeier and Jade Hastings in a three-car battle for the runner-up spot. The final caution with six circuits remaining saw Pierce lose second to Dobmeier the lap before the slowdown.
On the final restart, however, Pierce slid back past Dobmeier for second, but the battle for position cost Pierce a final shot at the win, crossing under the checkers in second.
Pierce’s 2023 campaign will come to a close a week from Friday on track championship night for the NOSA Sprints at River Cities on September 15th.
