Schatz earns hard-charger during Gold Cup Race of Champions
FARGO, N.D. (September 13, 2022) – The West Coast swing continued over the weekend for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series with three consecutive nights at the always exciting Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California for the Gold Cup Race of Champions.
The Gold Cup had a unique format, splitting the field of drivers between the Thursday and Friday night prelims. Donny Schatz competed during Friday’s event, driving the Carquest / Ford Performance No. 15 to an 11th place run.
The stacked field of 51 competitors came together for championship night on Saturday. Schatz finished fifth in his heat, just one spot shy of a transfer into the A-main.
After starting on the outside of the front row for the Last Chance Showdown, Schatz led every lap to earn the 21st starting position in the feature. Schatz worked his way forward throughout the 40-lapper, making his way up to ninth at the checkers and earning the night’s KSE Hard Charger award. Only show points were awarded all weekend so Schatz is still two points behind Sheldon Haudenschild for fourth in the standings.
This weekend just one event is on the schedule after Placerville Speedway was forced to cancel its Saturday night event due to firefighting efforts caused by California wildfires.
The series will head to Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford, California on Friday for the Tom Tarlon Classic. Schatz has 16 career starts at Keller Auto, highlighted by a win in 2013, and hasn’t finished outside of the top 10 at the speedway since 2000 – a span that covers 10 races. Over that 10-race stretch, Schatz has an average finish of 5.4 at the three-eighths mile oval.
