05.12.18 Devils Lake Speedway Recap

CRARY, N.D. (May 12, 2018) – Devils Lake Speedway kicked off its 2018 season Saturday night, featuring WISSOTA Late Models and 410 Sprint Cars co-sanctioned by the Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints and Canadian-American Outlaw Sprint Series. Jade Hastings picked up the Sprint Car win, while Cole Schill, Cole Haugland, and Daniel Aberle picked up WISSOTA Dirt Track Series wins.

The WISSOTA Late Model feature came down to a pair of heavy weights duking it out for the win in the closing laps. Chad Becker jumped out to the early lead with Brad Seng in two, but defending NLRA Late Model champion, Ricky Weiss, made his presence felt up front just five laps in.

Weiss placed a bid for the lead on Becker and took the point exiting turn two with seven laps in the books, but just as he did the caution was displayed.

On the ensuing restart, Becker appeared to have suffered a mechanical failure as his No. 12 machine slowed significantly. That handed the lead over to Weiss with Seng and Dustin Strand in third. At the halfway point, Strand cleared Seng for second and set his sights on Weiss for the lead.

It took nearly 10 laps for Strand to erase Weiss’ straightaway advantage as the driver of the No. 71 caught Weiss with four laps to go. On the final lap, Strand drove around the outside of Weiss off of turn two to take the lead.

Strand had a car length advantage going into the final set of turns, but Weiss drove his car in deep and pulled even with Strand. The two made heavy contact coming to the checkers, which sent Strand hard into the outside retaining wall. Weiss went on to cross the line first as the yellow and checkers waved.

The caution was called on Weiss and Strand was disqualified for exiting his machine while cars were still on the track, which handed the win to Cole Schill. Seng and Shane Edginton rounded out the podium.

Jade Hastings topped a slim, but stout field of 410 Sprints. Hastings grabbed the lead on lap one from the front row as Wade Nygaard split pole sitter Ty Hanten and Blake Egeland to take second.

From there it was a two-horse race as Nygaard tried to reel in Hastings, but Hastings was too quick. The 20-year-old Grand Forks driver opened up nearly a half-lap lead at the midpoint of the race as he effortlessly sliced his way through traffic.

Nygaard cut Hastings’ lead in half in the closing laps, but didn’t have enough to muster a serious challenge. Hastings cruised to his first career win at Devils Lake Speedway and third career Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprint Car win.

Cole Haugland led every trip around the high-banked quarter-mile clay oval en route to the WISSOTA Midwest Modified win, but it didn’t come easy. Around the halfway point of the feature, Haugland suffered what appeared to be a ball joint failure on his No. 10C machine under caution. Haugland elected to retain his place at the lead for the restart and it’s a good thing he did.

Despite not having any steering from the left front of the car, Haugland still managed to hold the lead even with a hard charging Lance Schill in tow. Schill threw everything he had at Haugland in the closing laps, pulling even with him on several occasions, but couldn’t complete the pass.

Haugland went on to take the win over Schill, Ryan Schroeder, Eric Haugland, and Logan Salazar.

Daniel Aberle and Aaron Blacklance went toe to toe for the WISSOTA Street Stock feature win. The two drivers battled side by side for nearly the entire second half of the 20-lap affair. Aberle found his groove around the middle of the track, which allowed him to clear Blacklance. That’s all he needed to open up a slim two car length lead and go on to take the checkers.

Dan Arends cruised to the Pure Stock win. He was chased to the checkers by Colten Laber as Lane Bachmeier rounded out the podium.

Racing continues next Saturday night at Devils Lake Speedway, featuring the first visit by the NLRA Late Models. The Buffalo Wild Wings NOSA Sprints and Candian-American Outlaw Sprint Series will also be in action, along with WISSOTA Midwest Mods, Street Stocks, and DLS Pure Stocks. Green Flag drops at 7pm.
