Three different winners visit victory lane in triple-header NLSA weekend
(June 25, 2019) – It was an action-packed weekend for the NLSA Lightning Sprints last weekend as the Greater Grand Forks Fair hosted the series for both events at River Cities Speedway on Friday and Sunday. On Saturday, the series made its first and only appearance of the season to Devils Lake Speedway in Crary, N.D. The parity of the NLSA Lightning Sprints shined all weekend as three different drivers collected wins.
Kelsi Pederson cruised to the 15-lap feature win to start the weekend off on Friday night at River Cities Speedway. Pederson started on the pole and took the lead over fellow front row starter, Alex Truscinski, on the opening lap. Pederson opened up a three car length lead early on, but Truscinski stayed within striking distance all race long. Once in lapped traffic, Truscinski closed the gap to within a car length, looking to the inside of Pederson occasionally, but never had enough of a run to pull alongside.
Pederson went on to take the win. Truscinski, Josh Abrahamson, Mike Schmiedeberg, and Dexter Dvergsten rounded out the top five. The win was Pederson’s second on a Midco Sports Network televised night.
The NLSA tour made its first stop to Devils Lake Speedway in over five years on Saturday night. Alex Truscinski picked up the win to record his third win of the season. Truscinski picked up the win from the pole position over Dexter Dversten and fellow front row starter Jason Berg. Through his first 10 races of the season Truscinski has five second-place finishes to go along with his three wins and has yet to finish worse than fourth.
Mike Schmiedeberg led the opening lap of the feature Sunday evening at River Cities. He was followed by third place starter, Zak Kwiatkoski, who slipped by outside front row starter, Josh Abrahamson, on lap two. Schmiedeberg opened up a big gap in the first two laps, but once in second, Kwiatkoski began reeling him in. Kwiatkoski erased Schmiedeberg’s lead by lap six and he quickly made the pass for the lead on the low side of turn two.
Kwiatkoski checked out from the rest of the field once he gained the lead as Schmiedeberg and Alex Truscinski battled for second. Schmiedeberg spun his machine in turn two, but kept it fired and got back up to speed in the fourth position.
Kwiatkoski easily raced to his first win of the season as Truscinski, Kelsi Pederson, Schmiedeberg and Abrahamson rounded out the top five.
